How to Convert PNG to WebP

Convert PNG graphics to a lighter web format while preserving transparency when needed.

3 min readSep 2, 2026

Converting PNG to WebP can reduce download size for logos, illustrations, and transparent assets. The export settings should match the role of the image.

Check transparency first

WebP supports transparency, so transparent PNGs do not need to be flattened onto a solid background. Confirm the edges still look clean against both light and dark surfaces.

Choose lossless or lossy

Lossless WebP is a good starting point for logos and UI artwork. For complex illustrations or photos, lossy WebP may provide a much smaller file; compare fine lines and gradients after export.

Verify the converted asset

Open the new file, check its dimensions and alpha channel, then test it in the actual page or upload flow. Keep the original PNG as the editable source.
